The best local LLM for coding is the one that performs the work your team needs within its hardware, data and review constraints. Code completion, a multi-file bug fix and an explanation of legacy behavior are different tasks. Compare exact model variants on representative examples instead of choosing from a generic leaderboard.

## Build a Shortlist by Coding Task

These are candidates for comparison, not a measured ranking. Select the exact artifact your runtime supports; model-card specifications do not establish its performance on your machine.

The model generates tokens; the runtime loads it; the coding assistant selects context and may expose tools. Evaluate all three. Local inference does not authorize unrestricted repository, shell or network access. We have not run a performance comparison of these candidates.

Shortlist coding models against the tasks the developer actually needs.

## A Coding Evaluation You Can Actually Review

Use a hypothetical repository with a small order-total function, a parser and an API client. Prepare tasks before trying models: fix a rounding regression without changing the public signature; [add a parser test for malformed input](https://www.cognativ.com/blog/local-llm-for-python-coding-top-picks-and-insights/); explain an asynchronous failure using the supplied code; and identify a request that cannot be resolved because a required file is missing.

For each task, record allowed files, expected behavior, prohibited changes and acceptance tests. Include negative constraints such as no dependency additions and no network calls. These constraints belong in the surrounding execution policy as well as the prompt. Model compliance with an instruction is not an access-control mechanism.

Give each candidate the same relevant context and generation budget. Capture the complete configuration and separate first-attempt output from any repaired result. If a person supplies an extra clue or modifies the code, record that assistance rather than crediting the model with an unaided success.

Inspect the proposed diff before running it. Execute only in an isolated disposable environment with no production credentials, sensitive files or unapproved network access. Tests themselves can run arbitrary code; a process timeout is not a complete sandbox. The [HumanEval execution warning](https://github.com/openai/human-eval?ref=cognativ.com) is relevant even when the generated code looks routine.

Score correctness against the acceptance tests, then check behavior outside those tests: changed contracts, error handling, unexpected dependencies and security-sensitive operations. Record review effort separately. A small correct patch can be more valuable than a broad rewrite that happens to pass the visible test.

As a hypothetical reporting example, 8 accepted tasks out of 10 is 80% on that ten-task sample. It is not a general coding-accuracy rate. State which two failed and whether either failure violated a critical constraint; a high average must not conceal an unsafe action.

Retain the evaluation cases and repeat them when upgrading the model, runtime or assistant. For implementation beyond a local experiment, Cognativ's [software engineering services](https://www.cognativ.com/software-development/) cover the surrounding delivery context. No model ranking or measured productivity gain is claimed by this guide.

![Review executable behavior and the resulting patch, not only the model explanation.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/cc/dc/ccdca949-0fe4-4119-8990-70a44ad75060/content/images/2026/10/cognativ-255-84c6ca42fd14-brand-v2-batch-coding-evaluation-semantic-r1-retained.png)

Review executable behavior and the resulting patch, not only the model explanation.

## Key Coding Benchmarks

Benchmarks can help screen candidates when the task, configuration and scoring method are understood. They do not directly measure success on your repository, support burden or security requirements. Use them as one input to a separate local evaluation.

### Notable Coding Benchmarks:

- [HumanEval](https://github.com/openai/human-eval?ref=cognativ.com): Python functional-correctness tasks with an explicit warning about executing generated code without a robust sandbox. The reference repository is now marked deprecated and unmaintained; use its methodology as historical context, not a maintained production runner.
- [MBPP](https://github.com/google-research/google-research/tree/master/mbpp?ref=cognativ.com): short Python programming problems with defined splits and test cases.
- [MultiPL-E](https://github.com/nuprl/MultiPL-E?ref=cognativ.com): translated unit-test-driven benchmarks for evaluating code generation in multiple languages.
- [CodeXGLUE](https://github.com/microsoft/CodeXGLUE?ref=cognativ.com): a collection of code-understanding and generation tasks; specify which task a reported result measures.

**Key factors influencing benchmark results include:**

- Context: the supplied files, prompt construction and usable token budget. A nominal window size does not show whether the model uses the relevant evidence correctly.
- Adaptation: compare a fine-tuned model with its baseline on held-out tasks; improvement is not guaranteed.
- Configuration: model revision, quantization, sampling, number of attempts, tools and test harness can change the result.

Compare like with like. A score allowing repeated attempts is not equivalent to first-attempt success, and a model using tools has a different evaluation setup from one generating an answer unaided.

![A benchmark can inform selection but does not replace evaluation on the intended workload.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/cc/dc/ccdca949-0fe4-4119-8990-70a44ad75060/content/images/2026/10/cognativ-255-faca74732360-brand-v2-batch-section-6-semantic-r1-napkin.png)

A benchmark can inform selection but does not replace evaluation on the intended workload.

## Coding LLMs Comparison

Compare candidates that can actually run locally in the chosen environment. A hosted-only model is not a local hardware alternative. Record exact checkpoint names and revisions so a small distilled variant is not confused with a much larger parent family.

Quantization can change memory demand and output quality. Test the representation you intend to deploy, not a full-precision benchmark and an unrelated local conversion. Include the prompt template and context settings in the record.

Separate quality and usability gates. A candidate must first meet nonnegotiable behavior and data requirements; then compare response time, accepted tasks and review effort. A faster wrong answer should not win through an aggregate score.

## Fine-Tuning LLMs for Coding

Fine-tuning can target a repeated behavior when appropriate training data and permission are available. First determine whether the problem is [missing repository context](https://www.cognativ.com/blog/what-is-prompt-engineering-a-detailed-developer-guide/), ambiguous requirements or a genuine model limitation. Adding approved context may address the problem without training.

Keep evaluation tasks separate from training examples and compare against the previous model on both target tasks and regressions. A style improvement is not proof of better security or debugging accuracy.

Document the dataset origin, exclusions, model version and training configuration. Private repository contents require an explicit handling decision even when the resulting inference runs locally. Re-evaluate the deployed quantized variant after any adaptation.

## Open Source Coding LLMs Community

Public model and tooling communities can provide implementation examples, issue reports and compatibility work. Review the specific project's evidence and maintenance practices rather than treating community size as a quality guarantee.

### What Makes the Community Valuable?

- Documentation: check whether setup and troubleshooting instructions match the exact release and hardware being evaluated.
- Repositories and discussions: review source availability and licenses individually; public access does not grant unrestricted use or redistribution.
- Issue tracking: look for reproducible reports, maintainer responses and documented workarounds; an open discussion is not a response-time commitment.
- Compatibility: common tooling can help, but tokenizer, architecture and message-format support still need to match the model.
- Contribution process: review how changes are proposed, reviewed and released, and who is responsible when maintainers are unavailable.

Community activity is a support signal, not a substitute for your own evaluation or an enforceable support agreement. Keep a tested fallback when a dependency or model is no longer maintained.

Historical models retained from the earlier guide

### Code LLaMA and Other Options

The following models appeared in the original guide and remain useful historical examples of different coding-model variants. They are not presented as the current top three. Check maintenance, licensing and a contemporary task evaluation before selecting any of them.

#### 1\. Code LLaMA

- [Code Llama](https://github.com/meta-llama/codellama?ref=cognativ.com) is a Llama 2-based coding family with base, Python and instruction variants. The reference repository was archived on July 1, 2025, so assess ongoing support separately before selecting it for new work.
- Select the exact size and variant, not only the family name; their prompting requirements and intended tasks differ.
- Treat reported benchmark results as dated results under the publisher's setup, not measured performance in your editor.
- Review the applicable license and template before adapting or deploying the model.

#### 2\. StarCoder

- [StarCoder](https://huggingface.co/bigcode/starcoder?ref=cognativ.com) is a BigCode coding model; inspect its card and specified BigCode OpenRAIL-M license.
- Distinguish the original StarCoder checkpoint from other members or later releases with related names.
- Evaluate completion behavior separately from instruction-following; an interface should use the appropriate prompt format.
- Check the selected representation against actual memory and latency limits rather than promising efficient operation on any mid-range device.

#### 3\. WizardCoder

- [WizardCoder-15B-V1.0](https://huggingface.co/WizardLMTeam/WizardCoder-15B-V1.0?ref=cognativ.com) is an instruction-tuned StarCoder derivative described in its model card.
- Its historical evaluation is not proof of current superiority or suitability for a specific repository.
- Use its documented format and review the model terms; retrieval or an IDE wrapper is an additional application component.

A compatible runtime is required for each exact model. A GGUF conversion does not make every architecture supported, and an instruction model does not automatically provide safe tool execution. Keep those decisions separate.

## Make the Selection Reproducible

Record model revision, representation, runtime, assistant version, context construction and permitted tools. Track first-attempt acceptance, critical failures, latency and reviewer effort separately. Include hardware allocation and maintenance in the cost comparison; a free download is not free operation.

Test offline behavior after approved downloads, and disable unapproved remote fallback. When upgrading a model, quantization or editor integration, rerun the same task suite before expanding its access. Keep a known-working configuration and identify the owner responsible for support.
